Who is responsible for which portion of the Standards? 

Educators teaching grades K-5 are responsible for all components included in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. This includes preparing students appropriately in reading, writing, speaking, listening and language. In grades 6-12, where there is usually more than one teacher per class, the standards are divided into content area specific standards. Educators in these grades are responsible for the standards related to the material they are teaching.

The 5 essential components/Key Features of the Standards:

Reading: The ultimate goal of the reading standard is for student to comprehend what they are reading and to be able to apply what they have read to the real world. Students must be given the right support in order to advance from reading simple texts to the college and career ready level. Students must learn to consider textual evidence, connect between ideas, monitor their understanding and more.

Writing: The writing standards cover general skills, such as the ability to: plan, revise, edit and publish and skills defined by writing types, including: arguments, narratives, and informative/explanatory texts. Research skills and the writing-reading connection is also stressed at in the writing standards.

Speaking and Listening: The speaking and listening standards focus on developing students’ oral communication and interpersonal skills. Students learn to work well with others, to evaluate things they hear and to use information from various sources for communication purposes.

Language: The language standards include the general “rules” of the English language and focus on enhancing students’ general and academic vocabulary.
