Instructional
activities (How does
this game help develop language acquisition and development, both oral and
written?)
- Watch the phonics zoo video - https://www.getepic.com/app/read/46018. Have students sing along as your review all
alphabets with their sound.
- Tell students that today they will be perfecting their alphabet knowledge. They will practice recognizing, naming and writing all upper and lowercase letters.
- At the carpet area, quickly review all ABC’s with their sound. Call on students to name objects for each letter and have them say the sound of each letter.
- Have students play the ABC Mysteriez game on their personal tablets. Since you’re playing this game in a kindergarten classroom you will have to read the instructions with your students and model how to play this game. The goal of the game is for Students to find letters hidden among objects. Students use a magnify glass to analyze objects in great detail and try to spot as many alphabets as they can in the given time frame. Students should say the name of every alphabet they spot. If students click twice on the same letter, they lose 10 seconds of their game. They must try to remember which letters they have already spotted. A good idea is for students to write down what letters they located – it’ll help them score higher while simultaneously learning how to write the alphabets. Students can compete against their pairs to try to find the most alphabets in the shortest amount of time. (They can compare scores at the end of the game.)
- Students work in pairs using their personal white boards, to practice writing upper and lowercase letters. Each partner gets a turn to challenge their pair to write 3 different upper and lowercase letters. The partner checks his/her friend's work and they then change roles.
- Students fill in a writing alphabet worksheet.
Assessment:
Teacher
observes students as they play ABC Mysteriez. Teacher records each student’s
final level and score. Teacher guides and assists students that have a hard
time following the instructions and playing the game.
Teacher
collects the writing worksheet.
Debriefing: (refer to article pages 8-12)
Think Pair
Share: Students turn and talk with a partner to discuss how the ABC Mysteriez
game helped them learn to recognize and name alphabets.
Ask
students to share ways one can practice naming and recognizing alphabets by observing
the environment we live in. Share ideas such as: while in a car, shopping, in
the classroom… – students can look out and try to spot letters ‘hidden’ in our
everyday environment. This will
make them aware of the literacy world we live in. They’ll begin noticing
letters wherever they turn.
What cognitive skills does this game cultivate?
While playing this game students practice
recognizing and naming all upper and lowercase letters in
a fun way. Students perfect foundational reading skills as they search
for the hidden alphabets.
What new literacies does this game cultivate?
Students learn to thinks critically - to look for the
hidden/unknown fact in every situation, while sharpening their technological
skills. They challenge their seek-and find skills as they search for the hidden
letters - They explore numerous beautiful pictures and develop their eye for
detail as they find the disguised characters.
